What is PHEV and how does it work?

A Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) combines both an electric motor and a gasoline engine. These vehicles merge the advantages of electric driving with the flexibility of traditional fuel.

How Does a PHEV Work?

PHEVs offer three different driving modes that the onboard computer switches between automatically:

  • Electric Mode: Only the electric motor is used — zero tailpipe emissions for everyday city driving.
  • Hybrid Mode: Both electric and gasoline engines work together for maximum efficiency at higher speeds.
  • Gasoline Mode: When the battery is depleted, the vehicle runs on the gasoline engine alone, just like a conventional car.

A smart energy management system selects the most efficient mode in real time based on speed, battery state, and road conditions.

Core PHEV Components

Electric Powertrain

  • High-voltage lithium-ion battery (10–25 kWh)
  • Electric motor(s) (typically 80–150 kW)
  • Charging port (Type 2 AC and/or CCS DC)
  • Battery Management System (BMS)
  • Onboard charger (OBC)

Combustion Powertrain

  • Petrol engine (1.0–2.0L turbocharged)
  • Automatic or dual-clutch gearbox
  • Fuel tank (30–60 L)
  • Exhaust & emission control system
