Do you need a dedicated home Wallbox for a PHEV, or is plugging into a standard household socket enough? Here is an honest comparison to help you decide.

Standard Outlet (Mode 2) — Sufficient for Most PHEV Owners

PHEV battery packs are typically 10–25 kWh — much smaller than a BEV. This means a standard household socket (230 V / 10 A, 2.3 kW) can fully recharge most PHEVs in 5–8 hours overnight.

This is a perfectly viable long-term charging solution if:

  • You charge every night and your commute is under 80 km.
  • You have a dedicated, properly earthed socket in your garage or carport.
  • You use the manufacturer-supplied Mode 2 in-cable control box (ICCB).

AC Wallbox (Mode 3) — Recommended for Convenience & Speed

A dedicated 7.4 kW home Wallbox cuts full recharge time to 2–3 hours, giving you a full battery after a short lunch break or a few hours at home. Additional benefits:

  • Safer: Rated for continuous EV charging loads — standard domestic circuits are not.
