PHEV charging time depends on battery capacity, charger power output (AC home socket, AC Wallbox, or DC fast charger), and the vehicle's onboard charger (OBC) limit.

Note: DC fast charging is only available on select PHEV models (e.g. Skoda Kodiaq iV, VW Tiguan eHybrid, MG HS PHEV, Mercedes PHEV).

What Limits Charging Speed?

The onboard charger (OBC) is the bottleneck — even if you connect to a powerful AC Wallbox, the car can only accept as much power as its OBC allows. Common OBC limits:

  • 3.7 kW OBC: Most basic PHEVs — full charge in ~4–6 hours from a Wallbox.
  • 7.4 kW OBC: Common mid-range PHEVs — full charge in ~2–3 hours.
  • 11 kW OBC: Premium PHEVs — full charge in ~1.5–2 hours.
